The head of the Vigneron family is in the midst of a successful climb up the bourgeoisie ladder. He is the manager of an industrial factory and the Vigneron household is teeming with social activity.
Just before a family dinner with friends, Mr. Vigneron has a stroke and dies.
With his death it becomes clear that although he has accumulated a great amount of property, he is also in great financial difficulties due to loans and rendering of property which the family have no knowledge of, leaving the family penniless overnight.
Mr. Vigneron‘s business partner – Mr. Teissier, his notary (legal advisor) and the rest of his so-called friends pounce at the opportunity to put their hands on the remaining property belonging to Mr. Vigneron‘s helpless widow and three daughters.
The dreadful conclusion at the end is no less dark than the tunnel itself.
