The Overcoat

by Gogol

One morning a clerk named Akaky Akakievich Bashmachkin discovers a hole in his overcoat. In order to repair the overcoat, he approaches a tailor named Petrovich who advises him to have a new one made, but the cost of a new overcoat is beyond Akaky’s meager salary. A generous work bonus which Bashmachkin receives allows him eventually to purchase the overcoat and when it finally arrives in the hands of the tailor, Bashmachkin is unable to control his emotions and bursts into tears. His coworkers, realizing his excitement, throw a party in honor of the new overcoat and while on his way to the party Bashmachkin experiences, as if for the first time, the hustle and bustle of the street. At the party he is quite on his own and on his way home he encounters a couple of robbers who steal the overcoat. In an attempt to retrieve his overcoat, Bashmachkin runs from one police officer to the other but to no avail. He is treated with harshness and scold. Humiliated and  unwell he returns to his flat and dies.
